FASTING
Let's talk about fasting for 2 minutes. You know that since the dawn of time, the human race has been subject to rhythms of abundance and famine, and that eating 3x a day is a fad that's barely a hundred years old. What's more, it's only in the last 30 years or so that eating 3x a day PLUS 2-3 snacks has become part of our way of life. You have to wonder about all the marketing surrounding food companies.
At the same time, the authorities decreed that eating more carbohydrates and cutting fat was THE way to combat obesity. Strangely enough, cases of obesity have more than tripled? But that's another debate!
Back to fasting... Several scientific studies tend to prove that various types of fasting help reduce blood glucose and insulin levels, which is not at all trivial for pre-diabetics. By the way, it's time for a warning! If you are taking medication and/or suffer from type 1 or 2 diabetes, before embarking on a fast consult your doctor! It's very important.
So, fasting is good for reducing insulin and blood glucose, what does that do in the body? It activates the fat storage process for later use.
The liver has a reserve of glucose which it can use fairly quickly to allow us to go about our business; depending on the individual, this reserve can last from 12 to 18 hours. Thereafter, the body draws on its fat reserves, which it transforms into ketone bodies to become a source of energy. That's fasting explained in simplified terms. In the end, no matter how long you fast, you're sure to lose weight.
But there's so much more going on in the body when you're young: increased growth hormones, improved insulin sensitivity, lower blood cholesterol, improved mental clarity, reduced inflammation and it could slow down the aging process.
How do you fast? Simple, you simply stop eating and only drink water, if it does not go well, you feel bad, so simple you start eating again that's all!
How long can I fast for? You can do intermittent fasting for 16 hours, which is the easiest, or a 24- to 48-hour fast, and then there are specialized centers that do the follow-up for fasts of 3 days or more, because yes, some people fast for 14 to 30 days!!! Very important to have a follow-up for all types of young people by the way! Only 16-hour intermittent fasts can be attempted at home without too much danger, and again, if you're taking any kind of medication or suffer from an illness such as diabetes, consult your doctor before undertaking a fast!
As for the 16-hour fast. Super-simple, you have dinner the old-fashioned way around 6:00 p.m. and don't eat until 10:00 a.m. the next morning. So you skip breakfast. 16 hours gives your body time to eliminate your last meal and rest a little. 24 hours young? You have dinner with the old lady and don't eat again all day until the next supper. In reality, you'll have eaten 1x a day. Of course, there are plenty of protocols to follow, such as drinking water and bone broth to curb hunger. As for me, I fast 1 day of 24 hours a week and the rest of the week I do a 16-hour intermittent fast as much as possible, and I'm doing wonderfully! What's more, doing short fasts like this can reduce your appetite, so when the time comes to eat, you won't feel as hungry and you'll feel full much more quickly, so you won't store as much fat. Weight loss possible!
