HYPERBARIC ALLY OF MITOCHONDRIA. But... what is a Mitochondrion!?

*ATTENTION: As of November 1, 2019. Health Canada prohibits the sale and rental of hyperbaric chambers. Many of our articles were written before the Health Canada notice. Please take it into consideration 😉

First of all, the obvious question: What is a mitochondrion? To give a very brief scientific summary, it's a double-membrane organelle living in our cells. Mitochondria play an active role in many aspects of our biology, such as cell differentiation. Which cell is good and which is not. They play a role in regulating the cell cycle and apodosis. (Another big word used to describe the self-destruction of cells no longer really needed by our organism).

Now, in a less scientific way and with regard to hyperbarics, mitochondria are often described as the «energy powerhouse» of our body's cells.

It contributes to the majority of ATP production. ATP is our body's fuel, providing the energy needed for metabolic chemical reactions and locomotion. Okay, but what does this have to do with hyperbaric oxygen therapy? Let me explain one of the functions of a mitochondrion as simply as possible. Remember, I'm not a doctor, so please bear with my explanations.

In our respiratory cycle, one of the last stages of the cycle takes place in the cell, in the famous mitochondria. In this process, the energy of organic molecules coming from digestion is converted directly into ATP in the cell. This energy can then be used by the rest of the body.

On the other hand, if the cell lacks oxygen, it will use a Plan B to produce energy to survive. The cell will use a kind of internal «fermentation process» to meet its vital energy needs, creating ATP with as little oxygen as possible.

The problem is that this plan B is a much less efficient internal system than the original one, which requires a lot of oxygen. The original combustion at cellular level, thanks to good oxygenation, is favorable and optimal for the body.

From there, I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions, but I would personally tend to conclude from the following:

- Sessions in a hyperbaric chamber saturate all the body's plasma fluids, and thus all its cells,

- By capping the body's oxygen supply, the mitochondria will have what they need to do the job of internal combustion,

- And what part of the work of these organelles are we interested in? Providing one of the main sources of energy for the body, its organs and muscles, as well as regulating cell cycles.

In short, this is why hyperbaric chamber sessions give most people an amazing boost of energy and vitality! A well-oxygenated body will have all the tools it needs to function optimally, boosting the immune system and providing the energy the metabolism needs to be much more efficient and healthy!
